UNDP Issues Annual Report on Asia-Pacific Work

5 April 2013: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has released its 2012 Annual Report on the Asia-Pacific region, highlighting its recent work supporting countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), advance the post-2015 development agenda, and address climate change and sustainable energy.

The report, prepared by UNDP's Asia-Pacific Regional Centre (APRC), describes the main achievements in UNDP's regional programme.

On the MDGs and the post-2015 development agenda, UNDP assisted Bhutan, Cambodia, Central Java in Indonesia, Nepal and the Philippines in preparing country-level MDG Action Plans that applied the MDG Acceleration Framework (MAF) methodology. Two subregional forums of parliamentarians and civil society took place in Dhaka and Manila to discuss the post-2015 agenda.

On climate finance, UNDP helped Bangladesh, Cambodia, Nepal, Samoa and Thailand to review how well their public expenditures reflect their climate policy aims, through the Climate Public Expenditure and Institutional Review (CPEIR) process, and also established a community of practice bringing interested stakeholders together to exchange knowledge and experience regarding climate finance. UNDP also assisted countries in the Asia-Pacific region to access financing totalling US$170 million from global environmental funds, and helped prepare national-level plans for adaptation to climate change.

On energy, the report highlights the publication of a collection of case studies from 17 countries, “Towards An Energy Plus Approach for the Poor,” and support for the UN Secretary-General's Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) initiative.

The report also mentions: Asia-Pacific work on managing natural resources for equity and sustainability; high-level dialogues and regional preparatory work towards the 2014 World Conference on Indigenous Peoples; support for designing and implementing national-level adaptation to climate change; and technical and policy work on a regional tsunami warning system.
