UNDP Commends Maldives’ Intention to Become First Carbon Neutral Country
17 March 2009: The UN Development Programme (UNDP) has commended the announcement by President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives regarding his country's intention to become the world's first carbon neutral country within the next decade. President Nasheed noted that the commitment would be met through the implementation of an eco-plan to become carbon neutral, shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
Most recently, UNDP has supported the Government of Maldives to establish its first renewable energy initiative by developing an interactive knowledge platform for the Government, the private sector and donor agencies. UNDP has also supported the removal of barriers to the development and use of renewable energy-based systems to replace fossil fuel use in the country. [UNDP Press Release]
