UNCCD Posts Survey Results on the Organization Scientific Advice
March 2012: The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has released the results of an electronic survey that was conducted regarding the organization of international, interdisciplinary scientific advice.
The second special session of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST S-2) recommended that the Secretariat, under the guidance of the CST Bureau, organize a global electronic assessment to identify possible options and assessment criteria. As a result, an electronic survey was conducted on how to organize international, interdisciplinary scientific advice. The survey was available in English, French and Spanish, and was open from mid-July to the end of August 2011.
The survey solicited feedback on four options for organizing international, interdisciplinary scientific advice: use of existing scientific networks; establishment of a new scientific network focused on specific topics; use of existing intergovernmental scientific advisory mechanisms; and establishment of a new intergovernmental scientific panel on land and soil. Document ICCD/COP(10)/CST/MISC.1 reviews the findings of the survey.
The Final Report on the survey incorporates further pertinent material from ICCD/COP(10)/CST/6 and ICCD/COP(10)/CST/MISC.1 and extends the analysis presented therein. It also outlines how the findings can inform the work of the Ad Hoc Working Group on Scientific Advice (AHWG-SA).
