UNCCD Organizes Technical Workshop on Impact Indicators
17 December 2010: The Secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) organized a technical workshop on impact indicator refinement from 16-17 December 2010, in Bonn, Germany.
Scientists, experts, managers and practitioners at the event discussed how to refine the set of impact indicators that was provisionally accepted at the ninth session of the Conference of Parties (COP 9) to the UNCCD. Participants also shared their experiences in using impact indicators, particularly in the context of multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs).
Presentations, which are posted online, addressed, inter alia: UNCCD impact indicators; indicators under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and potential synergies with the UNCCD; the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and terrestrial ECVs (essential climatic variables) synergies with the UNCCD; Global Environment Facility (GEF) land degradation focal area indicators; the approach of the Observatoire du Sahara et du Sahel (OSS); European Environment Agency (EEA) impact indicators; the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Land Degradation Assessment in the Drylands (LADA) project experience; and development of a global indicator system.
