UN Special Rapporteur Highlights Links between Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies and Right to Adequate Housing
23 October 2009: Addressing a news conference on 23 October 2009, UN Special Rapporteur on adequate housing Raquel Rolnik stressed that adaptation and mitigation strategies that governments put into place, as well as the new climate change agreement to be discussed in Copenhagen later this year, must fully comply with human rights norms, including the right to adequate housing.
Rolnik added that governments must ensure that people affected by climate change are treated with dignity, that housing alternatives are appropriate and not just a temporary shelter, and that the livelihoods and social organizations of those affected are protected. She also added that lessons learned from previous natural disaster situations could be useful. [UN News Centre]
