UN Secretary-General to IPU Assembly: Parliamentarians Play Crucial Role in Addressing Climate Change

© IPU5 April 2009: In a message delivered to the 120th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held from 5-10 April 2009, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on parliamentarians to help maintain the momentum to address climate change in face of the current economic crisis.

Ban's message, which was delivered by Abdoulie Janneh, Executive Director, UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), stressed the importance of investing in ways that will create jobs and put the world on a path towards sustainable growth. Noting the need to agree on a new climate deal in Copenhagen in December 2009, he underlined that parliamentarians have the power to bring “issues to the table.” He urged them to do their part, especially with regard to implementation of “that hoped-for deal at the national level.” [UN press release] [UN Secretary General's statement]
