UN Secretary-General Releases Report on the Promotion of Renewable Energy
15 August 2011: In preparation for the 66th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), the UN Secretary-General has released a report on the promotion of new and renewable sources of energy.
The report was drafted further to a request from the UNGA to the Secretary-General, in its resolution 64/206, to submit at its 66th session a report on the promotion of new and renewable sources of energy. Released in the framework of the 2012 “International Year of Sustainable Energy for All,” the report is based on the recognition of the contribution of new and renewable sources of energy to the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG) and in addressing climate change.
The report provides an overview of new and renewable sources of energy, detailing their current status and prospects for deployement. It also describes the efforts for the promotion of new and renewable energy at the national and international levels, as well as options for coordinated global energy strategies.
