UN Secretary-General Discusses Climate Change with Finnish President

© ENB26 May 2009: In a press conference while on an official visit in Helsinki, Finland, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reported on his meeting with Finnish President Tarja Halonen.

He said they discussed how the upcoming UNFCCC negotiation in Copenhagen, Denmark, can be successful. Ban explained that they were wearing the slogan “Seal the Deal,” and thanked the President for her support in this campaign.

Ban also addressed the Finnish Parliament and urged parliamentarians to help address climate change, and encouraged them to join the “Seal the Deal” campaign with their President. He stressed the urgency to take action and called for a “comprehensive, fair and effective” climate change agreement. He added that such an agreement would not only “enable us to look toward a brighter future,” but also “unleash investment and innovation that can underpin a new green economy.” He expressed his appreciation for Finland's strong support on climate change and stressed the need for a new multilateralism to tackle the interrelated food, energy and climate crises.
