UN Secretary-General Designates Wangari Maathai as UN Messenger of Peace
14 December 2009: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has designated 2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai as a UN Messenger of Peace with a special focus on the environment and climate change.
Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan national, has gained worldwide recognition over four decades as an academic, environmentalist, women's rights advocate and parliamentarian. She introduced the notion of community-based tree planting in 1976 and has been the patron of the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign since 2006.
