UN Secretary-General Addresses Opening of UN/ISDR Office and Education and Training Institute

© UN11 August 2009: Speaking in Incheon, Republic of Korea, at the opening of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) office and the UN/ISDR Education and Training Institute for Urban Risk Reduction, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed that “climate risk is adding a new dimension to disaster risk” and that rapid urban growth is increasing vulnerability.

He stated that the UN/ISDR office and Education and Training Institute would “enhance the capacity of city government officials and professionals to better analyze, assess and manage emerging risks from a changing climate.” He noted they will also promote innovative approaches to equip a new generation of urban planners and city managers with “state-of-the art knowledge of risk-sensitive urban development.”

The opening ceremony also marked the start of a three-day conference on “Building a Local Governance Alliance for Disaster Risk Reduction,” co-hosted by Incheon Metropolitan City. [The speech][UN/ISDR press release]
