UN-REDD Workshop Held in Indonesia

1 April 2010: The implementation of UN-REDD activities in Indonesia was officially launched at the UN-REDD Inception Workshop, held from 30-31 March 2010, in Jakarta, Indonesia. Representatives of various ministries, provincial governments, and international and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) discussed reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD) in Indonesia and the UN Programme's activities.

Presentations were made on the Government's policy and roadmap for REDD, current REDD initiatives in Indonesia, and the process of selecting pilot provinces for REDD activities. Participants discussed the best ways to involve local communities in implementing Programme activities. In a keynote address, Zulkifli Hasan, Indonesian Minister of Forestry, stressed the importance of coordinating and communicating activities with all relevant stakeholders and highlighted the role of local communities.
