UN-REDD Programme Newsletter Highlights New Partner Countries

UN-REDD22 June 2011: The June 2011 issue of the UN-REDD Programme Newsletter reports that six countries (Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Honduras, Mongolia, Pakistan and Peru) have joined the Programme as partner countries.

These countries can benefit from receiving support from the Programme and knowledge sharing, and will also have official observer status at UN-REDD Programme Policy Board meetings. The Newsletter also reports on meetings that recently took place on: forest governance and REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks); and indigenous peoples' rights in REDD+.

It also features: an article on Solomon Islands' readiness to begin the process of laying the foundations for its national REDD+ strategy; a commentary by Yemi Katerere, Head of the UN-REDD Programme Secretariat, on making the case for REDD+; and a policy update on advancing measuring, reporting and verification (MRV) for REDD+ in Mexico.
