UN-REDD Newsletter Highlights Policy Board Meeting Deliberations, Recent Workshops

26 October 2011: The UN-REDD Programme's October newsletter reviews recent activities related to its work on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks (REDD+).Highlighted among the month's activities, the Newsletter points to the 7th Policy Board Meeting of the Programme, which approved US$4 million for REDD+ in Nigeria, and heard updates on REDD+ readiness efforts in Colombia, Guatemala, Republic of Congo and Sri Lanka. The Newsletter further reports on recent meetings and workshops, including: a governance forum held in Oslo to discuss how governance assessments can be a tool in achieving social accountability, with one session focusing on REDD+; and a cross-regional workshop on community-level monitoring for national REDD+ programmes.

The Newsletter also describes the work of an expert group that has begun to define REDD+ implementation options for Panama, and includes a commentary on the difference between "stopping" deforestation and "reducing" it. [Publication: UN-REDD October Newsletter]
