UN Praises China’s Work on Disaster Recovery

© UN22 April 2009: On a visit to China, John Holmes, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, praised the nation's disaster preparedness and recovery efforts, as the first anniversary of the Wenchuan earthquake nears.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that, in his talks with authorities, Holmes encouraged the Government of China to take a greater role in multilateral humanitarian efforts, and that both agreed on the need to step up UN-China cooperation on curbing disaster risk and bolstering preparedness, especially in the context of climate change.
