UN High Commissioner for Refugees Calls for Greater International Cooperation

3 October 2011: At the opening of the annual meeting of the Executive Committee for the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres called on the international community to work better, with a sense of shared responsibility and commitment, to prevent conflict, adapt to climate change and better manage natural disasters.

Guterres pointed to the current humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa, noting that the international community had been slow to react. He noted the movement of hundreds of thousands of people from and within famine-stricken Somalia. The 62nd session of the Executive Committee of the UNHCR took place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 3-7 October 2011.
