UN-HABITAT Supports Youth Caravan to Durban
14 November 2011: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) is supporting a caravan with 200 youth from Norway and Kenya, which started off from Nairobi, Kenya, and will end in Durban, South Africa, at the start of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The caravan aims to bring awareness about climate change issues to communities through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana and South Africa.
The participating youth also aim to urge world leaders to reach a fair climate agreement in Durban. A concert in Kings Park Stadium in Durban will close the caravan event, with Nobel Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu expected to attend.
UN-HABITAT is also supporting Kenyan youth to engage in the "Road to Rio" process to ensure that the youth voice informs the discussions at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) to be held in June 2012 in Brazil. [UN-HABITAT Press Release]
