UN-HABITAT, IESCO to Cooperate on Youth Initiatives
24 April 2013: The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) signed an agreement of cooperation with the International Ecological Safety Collaborative Organization (IESCO) on the sidelines to the 24th Session of the UN-HABITAT Governing Council. The agreement will support urban youth initiatives, including climate change adaptation activities, youth empowerment and urban ecological safety programmes.
The agreement will support four youth activities: surveys and publication of the State of the Urban Youth China Reports; training in ecological safety and entrepreneurship; an Innovation Awards programme; and an Urban Ecological Safety Index incorporating information on construction, city location, management, planning and positioning. These activities aim to promote youth innovation and participation, and to highlight best practices in ecological and urban safety and entrepreneurship.
Joan Clos, UN-HABITAT Executive Director, said the agreement will provide “focus and momentum for addressing urban issues such as urban poverty, youth unemployment and ecological disasters caused by climate change and poorly planned urban settlements.” Jiang Mingjun, Director General of the International Ecological Safety Collaborative Organization, stated that the programmes implemented under the agreement will raise awareness on “urban youth issues and strengthen their capacities in ecological safety, poverty alleviation, climate change adaption, green economy and creation of green jobs needed to create a living environment that offers them sustainable economic opportunities."
