UN Framework Classification for Fossil Energy and Mineral Reserves and Resources Now Operational

UNECE25 November 2013: The United Nations Framework Classification for Fossil Energy and Mineral Reserves and Resources 2009 (UNFC), a universal classification and evaluation scheme for mineral reserves and resources, has become fully operational.

On 22 November 2013, the Committee on Sustainable Energy of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) approved specifications for the application of the UNFC, which now has full approval for its operationalization, and a global standard for the classification of extractive activities now exists.

The UNFC is an universal framework incorporating and unifying existing systems, that aims to enhance communication on fossil resources and reserves by providing a simple reporting mechanism. It was formed to ensure that the most complete picture of current and future fossil energy and mineral resources is available to facilitate accurate and effective resource management. It was developed to meet needs of those carrying out energy and mineral studies, government resource management, corporate processes, and financial reporting.
