SPC Consults PICs on REDD+ Policy Framework
3 April 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) has announced that, under the GIZ-funded regional project Climate Protection through Forestry Conservation in Pacific Island Countries (PICs), it has recently concluded a study tour to meet stakeholders in Tonga, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu and Fiji.
The project aims to develop a regional policy framework guiding the implementation of REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, as well as conservation, sustainable management of forests, and enhancement of carbon stocks). According to SPC, the consultations were the first step on the roadmap for the development of a “relevant, realistic, practical and implementable” policy framework. A draft policy framework will now be developed and presented at a regional consultation meeting scheduled to convene in Suva, Fiji, from 24-26 April 2012, with the final policy document being considered by the Heads of Agriculture and Forestry Services and Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry Meeting in September.
