SPC Consults on Draft Pacific Policy Framework for REDD+
26 April 2012: The Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) convened a regional consultation on the development of a Pacific Regional Policy Framework aimed at facilitating Pacific Island Countries' (PICs') access to funding for REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks).
During the meeting, which took place from 24-26 April 2012, in Nadi, Fiji, participants provided feedback on the first draft of the Policy Framework, which aims to orientate national REDD+ programmes of larger forested PICs, but also to identify the support needed to manage the tree resources in smaller island States. The drafting committee will take the views expressed in the regional consultation and integrate them into a revised Policy Framework for the consideration by the Heads of Agriculture and Forests and the Ministers of Agriculture and Forests in September 2012.
The process to develop the Pacific Regional Policy framework for REDD+ is funded by Germany's International Climate Initiative through the SPC-GIZ "Climate Protection through Forest Conservation in Pacific Island Countries" Project. [SPC Press Release]
