Secretary-General Calls for Climate-friendly Alternatives to Ozone Depleting Substances
16 September 2011: The UN marked International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on 16 September. In his statement to mark the Day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the international community to avoid replacing ozone-depleting gases with high global warming potential substitutes.
Reflecting on the need to limit global climate change, Secretary-General Ban drew attention to the agreement to accelerate the phase-out of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) under the Montreal Protocol and underscored the need for parties to “leapfrog” high global warming potential alternatives, such as hydroflrorocarbons (HFCs), wherever possible.
