PIFS, SPREP Coordinate “Writeshop” for Renewables and Desalination Projects

14 July 2011:  The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) coordinated a "writeshop" that aimed to help over 40 participants prepare proposals for the Pacific Environment Community (PEC) Fund and the Pacific Islands Greenhouse Gas Abatement through Renewable Energy Project (PIGGAREP).

The "writeshop" took place early July 2011, in the Cook Islands, and involved the preparation of mock project proposals which were reviewed by a select panel for feedback.

PIGGAREP, which is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), executed by SPREP and implemented by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from fossil fuel use in Forum Island countries through the removal of barriers to renewable energy technologies. The PEC Fund, administered by the Forum Secretariat, is a commitment by the Government of Japan of approximately US$66 million to support Forum Island countries projects with a focus on the provision of solar power generation systems and sea water desalination plants, or a combination of both. [PIFS Press Release]
