Philippines Cities Join UN/ISDR Making Cities Resilient Campaign

13 January 2011: The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR) has announced that 39 municipalities of Cebu Province, the Philippines, have joined the campaign “Making Cities Resilient: My City Is Getting Ready!”

According to Gwen Garcia, Governor of Cebu Province, “the world has begun taking notice of the important role of provinces and states in fighting global warming.” She also highlighted the importance of creating a healthier environment, building green economies, and helping to create resilient cities and municipalities.

The aim of the Campaign is to enlist over 1,000 local government leaders to invest more in disaster risk reduction (DRR), including by: improving urban planning, infrastructure and building safety; reinforcing drainage systems to reduce flood, storm and health threats; installing early warning systems; conducting public preparedness drills; and taking measures to adapt to the increasing impacts of climate change.
