OECD Reviews Environmental Performance of Portugal

11 April 2011: The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has published a report titled “OECD Environmental Performance Reviews: Portugal 2011,” which underscores Portugal's environmental achievements and makes recommendations for further improvement.

The report notes Portugal's current economic and political difficulties, and recommends that the country should ensure that its environmental and economic policies are more mutually supportive. The report finds that, although environmental policies strengthened since the last OECD review in 2001, meeting post-Kyoto emissions reduction targets will remain a challenge. Specific challenges remain in realizing renewable energy potential as well as coastal zone and marine management.

The report includes analyses of topics such as greening growth, implementation of environmental policies, international cooperation , climate change, waste management and the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle), and nature and biodiversity. [Publication: OECD Environmental Performance Reviews: Portugal 2011]
