New CIFOR Director General Takes Office
12 September 2012: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) has announced that Peter Holmgren, former Director of the Climate, Energy and Tenure Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), has taken office as its new Director General.
Holmgren has a background in forest assessments, forest research and reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD+).
According to CIFOR, Holmgren will continue to work to bridge the gap among research, policy and practice by ensuring that forest-related research is communicated to decision makers at all levels. Part of this challenge includes emphasizing the need to ensure that research is demand-driven and responsive to prevailing policy questions.
Holmgren takes up his position as CIFOR prepares for its 20th anniversary, to be celebrated next year. He replaces Frances Seymour, who held the position since 2006.
CIFOR is a member of the Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). [CIFOR Press Release]
