Mitigation Partnership’s Asian Workshop Provides MRV Training

Partnership on Mitigation and MRV9 July 2014: The 'Asian Regional Workshop: Tracking Mitigation Actions in Asia' brought together participants from Bhutan, China, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam to hear from experts and share experiences on measuring, reporting and verification (MRV) of climate change mitigation actions.

Organized by the International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV and the Korean Department of Environmental Affairs, the workshop was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, on 8-9 July 2014. The workshop aimed to: help countries identify gaps in their own mitigation strategies; lead to further consultations among the countries in the region; and encourage regional collaboration in the international climate change negotiations.

During the workshop, participants heard from experts from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) - Technical University of Denmark (DTU) Partnership (formerly UNEP Risø Centre), and the World Resources Institute (WRI). These presentations provided background on MRV, reporting requirements under the UNFCCC, and information on developing low-emission development strategies (LEDS) and nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs).

The Republic of Korea, China, the Philippines and Thailand presented their experiences with meeting reporting requirements, developing greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, NAMA processes and developing NAMAs, respectively. Break-out sessions were held throughout the two days, giving participants time to go through MRV checklists on emissions, NAMAs and support in their respective countries and identify challenges in each area.

The Partnership, launched within the framework of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue by South Africa, the Republic of Korea and Germany in May 2010, supports a practical exchange on mitigation-related activities and MRV between developing and developed countries.
