International Potato Center Enters Partnership with Emphasis on Potato Adaptation

5 January 2011: The International Potato Center (CIP) has signed a renewed agreement with the Pisaq Potato Park's Association of Communities.

The agreement establishes a unique relationship between CIP and six high-Andean Quechua speaking communities. Through the initial agreement, signed in 2004, over 400 native potato varieties have been restored to the Park. At the signing ceremony, delegates from the Potato Park donated native potato varieties to CIP's genebank. Delegates also highlighted that the agreement addresses the need to promote agro-biodiversity, an issue discussed under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The agreement will place a special emphasis on studies directed toward native potato varieties' adaptation to climate change. CIP is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). [CIP Press Release]
