India Joins UNEP’s Billion Tree Campaign

25 February 2010: The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has announced that the Government of India has joined the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign by planting two billion trees since 2007, bringing the international campaign's total to over 10 billion planted trees worldwide.

India, one of Asia's fastest growing economies, is among the largest consumers of wood products and a large part of its population continues to depend on land, putting pressure on forests. India has instituted a tree planting system to combat land degradation and desertification, including windbreaks and shelterbelts to protect agricultural land. [UNEP Press Release]
