ILRI Documents Index-based Livestock Insurance for African Herders
26 October 2011: The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) has released two short films on livestock insurance for Kenyan pastoralists.
The films describe the development of the world's First Index-Based Livestock Insurance for African Pastoralists Herders, from a research project to an insurance product with the potential to protect many herding communities throughout Africa. The world's first livestock insurance for remote African pastoralists was launched in January 2010 as a result of years of research. The films were released following the first payouts to Marsabit pastoral herders in Kenya, which demonstrated the potential for index-based livestock insurance. ILRI is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). [ILRI Press Release with the Films]
