ILO and World Bank Reinforce Collaboration on Disaster Risk Reduction and Recovery

18 June 2009: On the margins of the Second Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, which took place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 16-19 June 2009, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Bank signed a joint statement to reinforce their collaboration to address the consequences of natural hazards and rebuild livelihoods in the aftermath of disasters.

The joint statement, signed by Zoubida Allaoua, World Bank Director of Finance, Economics, and Urban Development, and José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, ILO Executive Director of the Employment Sector, provides for enhanced cooperation between the two organizations to further promote innovative joint initiatives at the field level to help disaster-prone countries to reduce the risk of loss of livelihood due to disasters, accelerate the transition to post-disaster recovery, and prepare livelihood adaptation measures in view of climate change challenges.
