IFAD Loan Contributes to Resilient Rural Development in China

24 September 2012: The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is providing a loan of $46 million and grant of $1 million to the Chinese Government to support the Hunan Agricultural Rural Infrastructure Improvement Project.

The $93.2 million project, co-financed by the Hunan Province, aims to benefit over one million people from improved infrastructure and new technology to contribute to their food security. It includes increasing the agricultural production of 180,000 families through enhanced access to markets and support to adapt to changing environments and market conditions. According to IFAD, project activities, such as improving irrigation facilities, village roads, drinking water facilities, and rural electricity can strengthen resilience to climate-related shocks and contribute to sustainable development. [IFAD Press Release]
