IEA, South Africa to Cooperate on Sustainable Energy

International Energy Agency (IEA)28 July 2011: The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Government of South Africa have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on sustainable energy options, including on renewables, data collection and analysis, training and capacity building, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and energy technology.

During the signing ceremony, Nobuo Tanaka, IEA Executive Director, encouraged South Africa to cooperate with neighboring countries to best exploit their collective electricity resources, stressing that this effort would "pay back in terms of cost and lower carbon dioxide emissions globally.” [IEA Press Release] [Nobuo Tanaka's Speech]
