IEA Reports: China Becomes the World’s Largest Energy Consumer
20 July 2010: The International Energy Agency (IEA) has announced that China's energy consumption has surpassed that of the US sooner than expected, and is now the highest in the world.
In a press statement, the IEA further notes that the trend does not show signs of slowing, with consumption doubling since 2000 and per capita consumption still only one-third of the average in countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). However, the IEA statement provides that China's demand would be much higher today if not for the Chinese Government's success in reducing energy intensity and becoming a global leader in renewable energy technologies.
