ICRAF Examines Landscape Approach to Emission Reductions in Peru
September 2010: The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) has produced a series of papers (in Spanish) on Reducing Emissions from All Land Uses (REALU) to move beyond a Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) framework.
The papers examine the institutions needed to implement REALU based on workshops with key stakeholders and syntheses of existing research in Peru. The research is based on the recognition that land uses outside the forest, such as agroforestry, can store significant carbon while enhancing other environmental services and creating climate change adaptation benefits for smallholder farmers. For REDD or REALU to be effective, the authors stress the need for equitable benefit distribution mechanisms to be identified, and for coordination among government agencies responsible for national resource management to be increased. ICRAF is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
