ICAO, EC to Collaborate on Abating Emissions from International Aviation
24 September 2013: The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Commission (EC) signed a Declaration of Intent to collaborate in support of measures to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions from international aviation.
The EC intends to commit EUR 6.5 million towards environmental actions undertaken in the African and Caribbean regions.
The Declaration was signed on the first day of the 38th Session of the ICAO Assembly by EC Vice-President Siim Kallas and ICAO Secretary-General Raymond Benjamin. Benjamin welcomed the Declaration of Intent, noting its potential to support ICAO member States in the African and Caribbean regions that have expressed the need for technical and financial assistance to undertake mitigation actions. A timeline through 2016 has been developed for the ICAO and EC capacity building initiative. [ICAO Press Release] [38th Session of the ICAO Assembly Website]
