GEF SGP Presents Results of Recycled Wood Pellet Project
8 October 2012: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP), implemented by the UN Development Programme (UNDP), supported a project to build a wooden pellet production facility in the Rivne region of Ukraine.
The facility started operations in June 2012 for manufacturing wooden pellets that are both environmentally and economically sustainable, as they are produced from waste from the timber industry, energy willow, straw and other agricultural waste. By transforming waste into an economic resource and simultaneously reducing the use of fossil fuels, the project has raised local awareness regarding sustainable resource use, emissions reduction and environmental protection. In addition, 20 jobs were created, and the local residents can reduce their household heating expenses by using the wooden pellets. [GEF SGP Press Release]
