FAO Focuses on “Food Security in Times of Crisis” to Mark World Food Day
16 October 2009: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) observed annual World Food Day, celebrated on 16 October, with events around the world focusing on the theme of “achieving food security in times of crisis.”
A variety of events were held at FAO headquarters in Rome, including the launch of the FAO's “Food Security and Climate Change Challenge Badge” programme to involve youth in global issues. World Food Day was the finale of a series of events on food security, including high-level meetings, held at FAO headquarters in Rome throughout the week.
In his message marking the day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted the challenge of achieving long-term food security, stating that “over the past two years, volatile food prices, the economic crisis, climate change and conflict have led to a dramatic and unacceptable rise in the number of people who cannot rely on getting the food they need to live, work and thrive.”
