FAO and IWMI Launch Asia Pacific Water Forum’s Knowledge Hub on Irrigation Service Reform

22 January 2009: The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) launched the Asia Pacific Water Forum's Knowledge Hub for Irrigation Service Reform during a workshop held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 19- 21 January 2009. The Knowledge Hub will work towards the modernization of irrigation in the region.

The issue paper discussed at the workshop recognizes that climate change poses particular challenge to poorer economies in Asia and manifests itself through higher variability in temperature and rainfall, thereby directly affecting the agriculture sector. It further finds that environmental water requirements will increasingly become a driver of change in the future in conjunction with impacts of climate change, and analyzes the impact of the US Government policy on biofuels on food production and water demands in Asia.
