European Commission Releases Methodologies for Estimating Shipping Emissions

20 December 2010: The European Commission's Joint Research Centre has published a report aiming to provide the first comprehensive overview of methodologies for estimating air emissions from shipping, which describes technological solutions and analyzes policy options for reducing carbon emissions in the sector.

The report argues that significant improvements in the reduction of carbon emissions and air pollution, technological (fuel- and engine-related) solutions should be supplemented with market-based options addressing both regional and global measures, such as a greenhouse gas (GHG) emission trading scheme for the shipping sector at international level.
