EU, Mexico Discuss Preparations for Cancun
28 October 2010: The tenth meeting of the Joint Committee between the EU and Mexico – a mechanism established under the Mexico-EU Economic Partnership, Political Coordination and Cooperation Agreement – was held in Mexico City, Mexico, on 27-28 October 2010, addressing, among other issues, preparations for the Cancun Climate Change Conference.
According to the resulting joint declaration, the two sides reviewed the progress made to clarify the projects and initiatives of cooperation under the Joint Executive Plan, in increased coordination in multilateral fora, through a series of consultation meetings that have been held between the delegations of Mexico and the EU prior to: the Consultative Group of Ministers and High Level Representatives on Environmental Governance, held in July 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya; the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), held from 18-29 October 2010 in Nagoya, Japan; and the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the UNFCCC to be held from 29 November-10 December 2010, in Cancun, Mexico.
Both sides expressed satisfaction about the holding of the Second Meeting of the Mexico-EU High-Level Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change, which was considered an opportunity to exchange experiences and indentify joint activities in the area of green, low-carbon and sustainable economy and climate change. In that regard, Mexico and the EU reiterated their interest in further strengthening their activities on financial mechanisms, environmentally sound technologies, reduction of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, as well as carbon markets, including the implementation of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The two sides expressed support for the establishment of the EU-Latin America and the Caribbean Foundation, with a view to contributing to strengthen bi-regional partnership, to mutual understanding and to the visibility of each region in the other one.
