EIB Supports Water Sector Investments in Cantabria, Spain
28 November 2012: The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a €50 million loan to support investments in water and sanitation facilities in the Spanish region of Cantabria. The loan will help finance a project aimed at increasing water supply and wastewater management in coastal areas through the construction of new treatment plants and other sewage infrastructure.
The project will enable communities in the region to comply with the EU water treatment directive. In addition, the investment will yield benefits for climate change adaptation and pollution reduction, by improving water use efficiency and water recycling, as well as by improving the quality of discharges into surface and coastal waters.
The project is part of the region's Water Supply Master Plan and the Sanitation Master Plan and is expected to be completed in 2016. [EIB Press Release]
