Climate Change and Mountains Highlighted at Landscapes Forum

Mountain Partnership16 November 2013: During the Global Landscapes Forum, which convened from 16-17 November 2013, on the sidelines of the Warsaw Climate Change Conference, participants in a 'Building Climate Change Resilience in Mountains' group discussed the specific challenges climate change poses to mountain communities.

Panelists noted the need for resilience planning to complement national disaster risk reduction programs, underscoring the frequency of natural disasters in mountain regions. Others highlighted that impacts to mountain areas have generally been insufficiently considered under National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPA). In particular, rainfall and water availability remain among the largest challenges facing mountain communities in the context of climate change.

The session was organized by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), with support from the World Bank.
