CIFOR Organizes MRV Workshop in Indonesia

3 November 2010: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) organized a workshop on establishing a measuring, reporting and verification (MRV) system for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, and the role of conservation, sustainable use of forests and enhancement of carbon stocks (REDD+).

The workshop, which took place on 3 November 2010, in Bogor, Indonesia, focused on linking national strategies and sub-national implementation. Workshop participants representing a range of national and sub-national REDD+ stakeholders discussed the current progress of Indonesia's institutional developments for an MRV system, encouraged data sharing and consolidation among institutions, and shared experiences in managing carbon stocks at sub-national REDD+ pilot project sites. Two sessions were organized: one on the institutional features of national-level MRV and legal instruments related to public data access and sub-national REDD implementation; and the second on learning lessons from project‐based REDD development and the potential challenges faced in linking to the national MRV system.

The workshop produced a document providing an analytical overview of approaches to establishing a national MRV institution, and a conceptual framework to developing guidelines for the integration of national REDD strategies and sub-national implementation.
