CIFOR Newsletter Highlights Climate Change and Biodiversity Relationships to Forests

4 November 2012: In the October issue of its Newsletter, the Center for International Forestry Research's (CIFOR) new Director General, Peter Holmgren, presents a vision for sustainability objectives in forest ecosystems to complement sustainability in agriculture.

The newsletter also features articles on: trade-offs between agriculture and forestry efforts in meeting climate change mitigation objectives; a CIFOR blog post that describes best practices guidelines emerging from the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) meetings on balancing pressures on land for food and fuel while conserving biodiversity; agreement between the CGIAR Forest, Trees and Agroforestry research programme and the CBD Secretariat to collaborate on the goal of cutting deforestation by half by 2020.

The newsletter also explores second generation biofuels and their potential to be more fuel efficient and environmental friendly than previous biofuels. Finally, the newsletter invites participation in Forest Day 6, on 2 December 2012, to be held on the sidelines of the Climate Change Conference in Doha, Qatar. CIFOR is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). [Publication: CIFOR Newsletter, October 2012]
