CBD Publishes Expert Report on Biodiversity and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation

CbdOctober 2009: The report of the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on Biodiversity and Climate Change, established under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), has been published as CBD Technical Series no. 41, titled “Connecting Biodiversity and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation – Report of the Second Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on Biodiversity and Climate Change.”

The purpose of the publication is to provide biodiversity-relevant information to the UNFCCC. The printed version will be launched at the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC in Copenhagen. Main messages focus on: the impacts of climate change on biodiversity; the role of biodiversity in climate change adaptation; the links between biodiversity conservation and sustainable use and climate change mitigation; and ways and means to value biodiversity with regard to climate change responses. The report is the outcome of scientific and technical deliberations conducted by experts from 23 countries as well as UN, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, and indigenous community representatives. The Expert Group held two meetings, in October 2008, in London, UK, and in April 2009, in Helsinki, Finland. [The Report]
