CBD Executive Secretary Addresses St. Petersburg International Forestry Forum
20 October 2010: In a message to the 12th St. Petersburg International Forestry Forum, taking place in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation, from 19-21 October 2010, Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), highlighted two reports on biodiversity and climate change.
Djoghlaf highlighted the global importance of Russia's forests for biodiversity, human livelihoods and adaptation to, and mitigation of, climate change, and lauded the Russian Government's efforts to enlarge and create new protected areas. He called attention to two key CBD reports on climate change and forests. The first, "Connecting Biodiversity and Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation" (CBD Technical Series No. 41), discusses linkages between biodiversity and climate change, and offers scientific and technical advice on improving mitigation and adaptation strategies based on this information. The second, "Forest Resilience, Climate Change, and Forest Biodiversity" (CBD Technical Series No. 43), is a literature review of relationships among biodiversity, resilience and stability in forest ecosystems facing the effects of climate change.
