Adaptation Fund Board Accredits South African Institute as a National Implementing Entity
8 September 2011: The Adaptation Fund Board has accredited the South African National Institute for Biodiversity (SANBI) as a National Implementing Entity (NIE).
The NIE approach allows the possibility of accessing and managing funds independently of multilateral agencies. NIE accreditation requires significant efforts to comply with the fiduciary standards, institutional capacity, and transparency and self-investigative powers of the AFB. SANBI will be able to submit project/programme proposals for funding, in coordination with South Africa's national Designated Authority within the Department of Environmental Affairs.
SANBI has led national initiatives related to climate change adaptation and has worked with many universities and research institutions internationally. This accreditation makes SANBI the third accredited NIE in Africa and the fifth NIE internationally. [Adaptation Fund Press Release]
