The conference intends to bring together researchers, policy makers, and practitioners from developed and developing countries to share insights into the challenges and opportunities that adaptation presents.

This symposium, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Government of Canada, aims to raise awareness of the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in climate change mitigation and adaptation, thereby advancing the “green ICT” agenda. Among other things, it will provide an avenue to explore how advanced technologies can improve the environmental sustainability of the ICT sector itself. The symposium is part of ITU's activities in the lead up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), highlighting the importance of ICTs as enablers of environmentally-sustainable economic development.
