25_June_2016: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) will strengthen its support for global agreements on climate change, disaster risk reduction (DRR) and sustainable development, following resolutions adopted by the 68th session of its Executive Council on, inter alia: reinforcing WMO climate programmes; strengthening work on high-impact weather research and forecasts; improving and extending polar research and observations to include high mountain regions; supporting ocean monitoring; and promoting modern aviation meteorology services. continued...

22_June_2016: A joint project by the Global Mechanism (GM) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is exploring ways to stem the rural-urban exodus in West Africa by developing sustainable alternatives for seasonal migration. Such migration was traditionally used as a coping mechanism in times of poor harvests or extreme drought, but is increasingly being replaced by more permanent relocation due to the cumulative impact of drought, land degradation and climate change on local livelihoods. continued...

24_June_2016: The first ever Alliances and Coalitions Global Forum has concluded in Rabat, Morocco, with speakers emphasizing the importance of engaging all actors, not just States, in climate action. 17_June_2016: Ministers, government officials, mayors and UN representatives have agreed on actions that will make cities more resilient against disasters. The High Level Forum on 'Implementing the Sendai Framework For Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) at the Local Level' marked the first time that mayors and representatives of municipalities came together to discuss how to implement the Framework. The meeting resulted in an outcome document titled 'The Florence Way Forward,' which recognizes the importance of coherence at the local level to complement overall implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change. continued...
