UNESCO, AOSIS Exhibitions Present SIDS Response to Climate Change [viewed]

31 March 2011: The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in partnership with the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), has created a multimedia project to exhibit pioneer actions implemented by small island developing States (SIDS) in the face of climate change and rising sea levels.

30 March 2011: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published seven submissions from parties (FCCC/AWGLCA/2011/MISC.6) on views on the issues relating to the a work programme for the development of modalities and guidelines listed in decisions 1/CP.16, paragraph 46, including with respect to the initial scheduling of the processes described in chapter III.A (Enhanced action on mitigation. World Bank, GEF Project Supports Mangrove Planting in Kiribati [viewed]

29 March 2011: Over 37,000 mangrove seedlings have recently been planted on the islands of Aranuka, Butaritari, Maiana, Makin and in North and South Tarawa, Kiribati, as part of a project supported by the World Bank, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), AusAID and the New Zealand Aid Programme with the aim of reducing Kiribati's vulnerability to climate change, climate variability and sea level rise.

Event: Second Clean Energy Ministerial [viewed]

The Second Clean Energy Ministerial is an initiative of the Major Economies Forum (MEF), which was established in early 2009 to facilitate a positive outcome of climate change negotiations at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. Ministers of the MEF will discuss initiatives that were developed as a result of the first Clean Energy Ministerial, which met in July 2010 in Washington, DC, US. These initiatives sought to eliminate the need to build more than 500 mid-sized power plants, begin smart grid deployment, deploy 20 million electric vehicles by 2020 and bring solar lanterns or other improved energy services to more than 10 million people without access to grid electricity by 2015. Governments participating in Clean Energy Ministerial initiatives include Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, the European Commission, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Norway, the Russian Federation, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, and the United States.
